Now This is Rich

Sometimes pop psychology is all too obvious. The adjectives that former City Councilwoman Berry has used to describe Dennis Maloney are exactly what was used in describing her and why she lost in a landslide in the last election. In this case the pot seems to be talking about the rather well polished silverware (despite a couple of smudges.)

From Letters to the Editor in today’s Eagle

Arrogant, ill-tempered

I have served on many boards and committees in this community for more than 25 years. It was also my privilege to serve on the College Station City Council. During my tenure on city council, I was able to observe first-hand the commitment and work ethic of several candidates in the current races.

Dennis Maloney is arrogant, ill-tempered and disrespectful of anyone who has an opinion that differs from his. Collaboration and cooperation are not his way. Ben White is a gentleman and will make a good mayor.

In the contested race for Place 1 on the council, current Councilman John Happ is seeking a one-year unexpired term. John Happ has been and would continue to be if elected an outstanding councilperson. He has the respect of his peers. He has a distinguished record of service to our country, our state and our local community. He has received numerous awards and recognition in the field of transportation

As the city continues to develop its new Comprehensive Plan, it is vital that we have council members who will look at the needs of the entire city. Preventing future traffic problems and correcting existing congestion is paramount. Our need for green space, hiking and biking trails, and maintaining our excellent core services requires the intellect, experience, and know how that John Happ possesses. He will work hard for all the citizens of College Station.

Please join me in voting for the best candidates, both of whom The Eagle recommends: Ben White for mayor and John Happ for city council. Our city will be better served with these two men of integrity.

NANCY BERRY

I would have to say that this is no gift to Ben White. As Happ so frequently voted in a block with Berry, the guilt by association seems a little more fitting

I'm not here to condone or criticize Nancy Berry's remarks but the platform seems available and appropriate to address the questions surrounding Dennis Maloney's "temper". The Eagle may have based their opinion on perception, which of course is equal to or greater than reality when it comes to politics. There is a reason...actually there are numerous reasons this perception is out there, and they weren't contrived out of thin air.

The purpose of this post is to offer an example of this evolving perception and perhaps allow you to distill a shred of reality from it.

In May 2003 the First American Bank HQ groundbreaking was held. Shortly thereafter Don Adam sent a terse letter to Ron Silvia which mentioned among other things College Station council "members" use of disparaging profanity at the ceremony. To quote from the May 6 letter:

"It was brought to my attention that certain City Council members who were present at today’s groundbreaking ceremony were overheard making statements that suggested they had not been advised of the remaining contingencies for the project. This is even more troubling to me because the statements were reportedly made in the context of derogatory comments against myself, which were laced with profanity."

The entire letter can be read here: http://www.theeagle.com/region/localregional/051303letters.php

Though it is still speculation and thus perhaps unfair to Maloney, it has been recounted by people fairly close to the situation that Maloney was the one, or at the very least one of the ones who used profanity while attending this event in a public capacity. This disturbs people who will be voting for a mayor who is effectively the public face of the City of College Station. They are afraid he will come off as a temperamental rube (albeit a rube with a thesaurus) who will wittingly or unwittingly project this image upon both his city and his constituency.

For all we know, maybe Maloney didn't attend this ceremony or didn't use profanity. If so, he could clear his name from this incident by saying so. For now, all we can do is take a look at some of the facts which may have led to this speculation.

The sitting council members at that time were: Ron Silvia, James Massey, Dennis Maloney, Scott Mears, Anne Hazen, Winnie Garner, and John Happ. Robert Wareing had been elected but was sworn in the day after this letter was written.

You can elminate Winnie Garner, unless it's a good career move to rant like a sailor at your boss's groundbreaking ceremony. Ron Silvia? I'm not sure he knows how to put two sharp consonants together and deliver them without washing his mouth out. James Massey, no way. Scott Mears is Mormon and doesn't drink or smoke but maybe he says "bullcorn" or "shucks" on a bad day. Anne Hazen, well in the past she's been irritable at times...but profanity at an official event? Uh, no.

Remaining are John Happ and Dennis Maloney. Happ was in the military so he probably has a few vernacular "assets" in his ammo belt. But continents will collide before you'll hear him use them in his capacity as a public servant.

That leaves....well, I'll let you do the math.

That's what you got? It is speculated that years ago Dennis was overheard using strong language in talking about Don Adam?

You do realize that most of the city was mumbling those same sentiments. If Dennis had lost his temper and expressed those sentiments to Adam's face, most would consider him a hero.

I personally do not want council people who do not have a capacity to express temper. Occasionally expressing a temper is not the same thing as having a problem with temper. In fact, not being able to occasionally express anger or outrage is a problem.

Vote for Maloney because he cares enough to have passion about our quality of life.

Let me get this straight, Hugh.

Maloney first votes to approve a development agreement with Adam.

Then you say Maloney would be a hero for cursing in Adam's face over this same agreement. An agreement which Adam followed to the letter.

Wow, just wow.

I don't dislike Don Adam although I'm not exactly a big fan either. But I'm not sure I could put together a more self-contradicting argument than the one above.

I'm with joseph on this - it was College Station that blew that deal. This was their SECOND attempt at a hotel/convention center, so you would think they would keep a closer eye on their budget.

Adding unnecessary amenities to the design increased the overall cost to a tipping point, to which Don Adam had justification in walking away. The leaders of College Station had these big extravagant ideas and plans of what would be in this center, yet didn’t have the leadership in place to realize the financial implications of these ideas and plans.

What do we have to show for it? The citizens of College Station basically paid for all the infrastructure for Don Adam’s mega-building with no hotel/convention center to show for it.

Dennis loves to say, “You have to dream big.” Eventually the bills have to be paid for these big dreams.

“Joseph” I too doubt that you could put together much of argument at all if you leave so much information out. While I don’t remember the details well enough to get far into this, I can safely say that you have grossly oversimplified a fairly complex situation.

“CS Observer” My recollection is that Don Adam bragged about taking nothing from the city. If you were to start negotiations with someone and they pulled a gun on you, would you continue in that relationship? In his dealings with both Bryan and College Station Don Adam has acted like he owns the community. The tantrum that “joseph” mentioned with Adam writing an angry letter to the city because someone had overheard a private conversation in which he was not treated with the respect that he thought that he deserved, along with his inability to deal with Kim Foust, not to mention the law suit against Bryan showed that he is a tyrant who cares little about the people of either community.

Though I don’t remember the details of how this all went down, I would have to say that the city leaders that got us out of his clutches showed good sense.

Hugh, please do not think I am trying to defend Don Adam in any way. I am trying to show you that there are two sides to every argument, and you should really try to get both sides before posting not only the stuff on this thread, but other stuff on the other threads on this site.

Miramont vs. Traditions - I honestly do not see how you, of all people, are not on Don Adam’s side during this fiasco. Adam wants to finance and develop a golf course all on his own, yet the city is bankrolling a competing golf course in the same community. Should he sit back as a locally owned business and let a govt. subsidized competitor take part of his market? He was protecting his business, much like you are attempting to protect the locally owned businesses of the community from big-box stores that get incentives from the city to locate here.

The failed hotel/conference center – Again, the city of College Station had a contract with Don Adam. He agreed to live up to his end of the agreement, unless construction costs reached an agreed-upon, specific point. Rather than cut back Kim Foust’s wish list (fountains, art center complex, performing arts building), College Station leaders decided to “dream big” and keep all these things as planned. The costs over-ran, Don Adam executed the opt-out clause in the contract, and the citizens of College Station were left to pay for infrastructure to nothing. Please explain to me how I should be thankful that the city leaders got us out of that situation?

Anyway, I wanted to show that there are always two sides to every story and they are not always black and white. Thanks for having this blog and hopefully it can serve the original purpose of having civil discourse on these important issues before us.

Why would I not think that you are defending Don Adam. That is exactly what you are doing. I do not globalize that - as you seem to have with my endorsements - and assume that you are willing to defend everything that Adam has done. If you were to read all of this blog you would see that I have criticized some of the actions of fellow supporters and even of one of the people that I have endorsed. I think that I have a handle on gray.

The difference in suing the city to protect your business interests and working for the support of local businesses is community.
