Shame on the Eagle

Rather than correct the grievous mistake they made in implicating Mary Kaye Moore in financial wrongdoing, the Eagle has continued to cast aspersions where they know that they will not stick. But the Eagle seems to have an agenda; so sticking may not be the issue. They may be content to simply bruise her campaign right before the election.

Yesterday, before I published information on this blog, I made several calls to city officials and others. Within an hour I was significantly convinced that there had been no malfeasance on the part of Moore and probably none from anyone else either.

What did appear to be happening was a premeditated smear campaign against Moore’s good reputation. And the Eagle is playing an active roll in this dirty deed.

This morning the Eagle continued to suggest that there is a shadow of doubt over Moore’s integrity when they know full well that there is not. While buried in the article is some evidence that Moore may not be guilty after all, they spin the whole affair as a vivid indictment on her character. If I were Mary Kaye Moore, I would be seeking legal council to protect my reputation. The Eagle may have skated on very thin ice over the waters of liable, but they wear the mud of indecency.

The fact, that we are not even talking about money that left the city, but only about the way that money was transferred within the city, should be a pretty good clue that this is a ruse. The fact that the Eagle and maybe even the good old boys of City Council now admit that they were wrong about almost all of their claim but continue to hide behind the thinnest of a shred of accusation against Moore rather than profusely apologizing for such a cruel error speaks volumes about their missing sense of decency.

And what of their glass house? Did you ever wonder how a group manager at BTU managed to become interim city manager? How many other cities do you suppose have thought to tap a group manager in their utility division for such a job. It is probably just a coincidence that the Mayor’s brother in-law is Dan Wilkerson, who manages BTU and is a part of the good old boy network that was gunning for Moore, a woman who was running the city to serve not just the good old boys but all citizens. But it would have just been too obvious to put Wilkerson at the helm of the city after they ran Moore off, so they put his subordinate, Keen Rigister, in the job. What, do they think that we are stupid?

And now Wilkerson says of Register "He was totally independent of BTU and me while he was acting city manager, the things he did at that time were for the City Council."

Are any of you buying this? Are any of you believing this? Mary Kaye Moore has been a dedicated public servant and committed citizen in this community for a long time. Most of the people of Bryan are good people who know better than this. I pray that they will see what is being done in their name. Please register your feelings with the City Council (councilweb@bryantx.gov) and with the Eagle (donnis.baggett@theeagle.com 979-731-4657)
