TAX FREEZE

The College Station City Council showed wisdom in delaying a decision on a tax freeze for senior citizens. While we should applaud council's desire to protect our senior citizens we should also appreciate their reluctance to do it too hastily or paint over the problem with such a large brush. A tax break for seniors is a reduction in revenue for our schools. Providing a tax freeze for seniors on an as needed basis is a great idea. Providing this protection as blanket coverage is not. Wealthy seniors who have paid off their mortgage should not be allowed to skip out on their fair share of community support.

Update: It was pointed out to me that this tax freeze does not apply to school taxes. While this is an important clarification, it does not change the general point that when we give someone a tax break we are reducing revenue to be used for our community. Before we give such tax breaks we need to make sure that they are truly needed
