I took a bit of a vacation from this blog, which was a a mistake because we do not have enough venues for discussing the life of our community. Also, there is a great deal to be done on the path of continuous community improvement. While the people of College Station have made it clear that we do not want sprawl, it is continuing. We have lots of great opportunities for good infill development but we continue to see cheap, poorly planned and unattractive development at our gateways and beyond.
Have you driven out highway 30 lately? Cheap unplanned development is marring our community. But I am confident that things are changing. College Station’s new growth management strategies seem to acknowledge that too little had been done in the past and are looking to make corrections.
But the changes that we need are not just policy changes. We are seeing changes in the expectations of our community. It is no longer assumed that any development is good development. We want a friendly, well-connected, walkable city and what is more the citizens of College Station are starting to realize that it is not enough just to want these things. We have to get involved to make them happen. This is because change never comes easily and because quality of life issues come at a price. Until recently most development decisions were driven by business people whose short-term profit goals were not in line with the long-term vision that most citizens have for the quality we want to enjoy in our community.
In College Station we have seen young and old, men and women, conservatives and liberals, come together to speak up for a better community life and a more beautiful town. Despite the whining of certain developers, we know that with a good quality of life comes a strong and viable economy. Even if some developers can not turn as quick a profit, we know that over the long haul this is smart business.
