There are some arguments so inane that the best argument against them is simply to repeat them.
A letter published in today's Eagle
A disaster for College Station
David McWhirter's letter (Eagle, May 15) vividly demonstrates why a vote for John Crompton for the College Station City Council would be a disaster for the future of our city. The letter states this man stands for making the greening of College Station a top priority and growth dependent on neighborhood businesses. Big retailers, even though they bring in a large portion of the sales tax necessary to finance our city services, are out of the question.
I have attended the Planning and Zoning Commission meetings and have listened to supporters of Crompton state how they only want neighborhood businesses to which they can walk and buy a package of gum. No businessman will survive by selling an occasional package of gum.
On the other hand, recent economic reports state where a big retailer comes to town there is a 3 percent drop in the cost of living and at least a 9 percent drop in the cost of food. Crompton's policies of preservation of the status quo mean people on fixed incomes would be taxed an additional 9 percent on their basic necessity of food and an additional 3 percent on their everyday cost of living.
This attitude appears to be extremely selfish and deleterious to not only our seniors but our college students on fixed incomes. Perhaps it is time to vote for someone who has business experience and cares for all members of the community instead of someone who has a few well-organized vocal supporters intent on living in the past, ignorant of economics and heartless toward those with fixed incomes.
