HATS OFF TO HEROES

This excellent article by Mary Kaye Moore will appear as a paid advertisement in the Eagle on Wednesday and Thursday.
________
Most citizens hesitate to get involved in controversial issues but some leaders believe strongly enough in their ideas to take that bold step. My campaign has given me the opportunity to meet and know some of the finest leaders in this community. I am proud to have their support in my bid for mayor.

Lee Roy Johnson, a retired Texas A & M administrator, has worked to protect his and other neighborhoods in this community. He played a key role in getting the Neighborhood Conservation District ordinance approved and with others walked many of
Bryan’s neighborhoods getting the signatures of 1,300 households.

Mike Southerland has been a strong advocate and informational source for the citizens of this community. His questions not only challenge the status quo but bring information on decisions to the attention of all those who attend, listen, or read about the Council meetings. He has been steadfast in his belief that all citizens should have a voice in the decisions that affect their everyday life. Mike had my vote and 1,200 others in his Council win. He continues to have my respect and admiration.

Karen Hall is an intelligent, strong advocate for the citizens whose property in the Highway 21 corridor was annexed in 1999. She is polite, kind, and exceptionally knowledgeable about annexation law and its intent. Karen has worked tirelessly, giving generously of her time and resources to gather 1,800 signatures on a petition, gaining the loyalty and admiration of several thousand.

Markey Weaver is a small business owner who spoke out when she believed a pending council decision would adversely affect several businesses along
Briarcrest Drive. Along with other business owners in the area, she made her voice heard.

These courageous leaders are heroes in my book. They are willing to take a stand, express their opinions, and spend their valuable time to fight for their rights and those of their neighbors. I am honored and humbled to have their support, encouragement, and advice.

History can present many examples of the catastrophes that befall communities and countries when their citizens are prevented or discouraged from voicing their opinions. Is that what we want for
Bryan? If not please join my many supporters in voting for me for Mayor of the City of Bryan.

If only by the clarity of her prose, Mary Kaye Moore once again demonstrates her superior qualification for the job.

Much more to the point is the issue of integrity. While Mark Conlee is all too quick to point an accusing finger at the non-issues cooked up by him and his good old boy posse and published repeatedly by their lab dog, the Eagle, Mary Kaye continues to speak to the issues, her qualifications, and now, to the quality of those at whom the Eagle has attempted to cast aspersions. While some may be too intimidated to speak out, my sense is that the good citizens of Bryan will see through the deceptive efforts of the Eagle and other Mark Conlee goons.

Just as the election of Mike Southerland in the last election was a vindication of decency in Bryan, let’s hope that once again the people speak their mind through their vote. Please encourage your neighbors to vote for decency by going to the polls on May 12th and casting a ballot for Moore.
