This is an interesting article from the Austin-American Statesman. The article is about a lawsuit brought against Pedernales Co-op to claim $164 million that the energy co-op is sitting on. The suit claims the money belongs to Pedernales’s members. As a co-op, its members are its customers.
The power, lobbying influence and huge sums of money that the energy industry commands in Texas has become more conspicuous recently with law suits such as this one and the effort, with the help of our Governor, to fast track eleven dirty coal burning power plants.

All utility companies trade on the trust of people. They do this for greed of money and power.
If you think that they are to blame, what are you doing about it? You cannot blame them id you sit idly by and do nothing more than bitch about it.
Like most corporations, utilities companies take that which does not belong to them and they sell it.
When you pay for energy you are part of the problem.
When you fail to oppose them in everyway that you can think of, you are the problem.
Who gave them permission to dig into the earth and take the coal?
Who gave them permission to spew carcinogens into the air?
Who gave them permission to crisscross the land with their power lines?
Who says that you cannot strike back?
Lawsuits!!!! Ha!!! That is their game. If you want to save the planet, you cannot play their game. You must kick them in the nuts, when they aren’t looking. Hell you better just go ahead and castrate them.

I don't know if removal of male anatomical parts would resolve the problem. I think that the Amish have a great approach. They try to stay off of the power grid, and seem to have very happy lives. It is a difficult way to live, but they are stronger and healthier for using the extra manual labor required to compensate for not having electricity. As for me, Texas without air conditioning would be tough to deal with, but I do try to conserve electricity.
Anne,
Welcome. Cute name. I'm guessing that you are a new poster or that you posted under a different name before. You certainly seem to embody your moniker. Your's seems to be somewhat of a left-wing, libertarian approach. As in there is no social contract.
I must admit that, in terms of the legal paradigm, it seems that there are grounds for suggesting that perhaps the contract is questionable or maybe even void, given the extent to which it is so one sided in some situations.
Nonetheless, democracy is the process of writing the contract. We have a means of addressing our concerns without going to drastic lengths. Though it is often hard to get people excited about what is in their best interest when it seems so abstract.
Interesting topic. I agree with no surgergy in the conclusion that Texas would be uninhabital without A.C. I say a prayer of thanks to Mr. Carrier for his invention every August. I would have to disagree with Ms. Key's concept of evil corporations taking things that don't belong to them and then selling it.
Sometimes I just marvel at humanity for our inquisitive nature. Even learning what herbs are good for healing or seasoning amaze me. I enjoy greatly the advances we have made in technology.
I recall a picture of Vice-President Nixon and Russian President Nikita Khrushchev looking at the new invention: a clothes dryer. The idea was while Russia was sending Sputnik into space, America was perfecting the modern laundry system marked the question: Which country was more "advanced".
Idealistically, I prefer the naivety of a nation intent upon pursuit of enhancement of life over the militaristic scaring the world into submission and pounding its shoe threatening to "bury you".
I also recall a wonderful memory of the family driving in the late afternoon on a vacation trip. The road was a 2 lane blacktop and the grass and forest lining the road was lush and green. We had the windows down because A.C. wasn't in cars then. My baby sister was sitting in some sort of car seat that was just aluminum tubing with a canvas seat that sort of hooked over the front seat. I was standing on the hump in the back, looking over the front seat. We were singing. It was a wonderful time. We were not burdened by the terror of becoming projectiles hurtling through the windshield. Sometimes, I just long to live my life without the government telling me what to do.
Nancy,
I can only imagine that you are joking. You don’t want to let kids who have passed all of their high school classes walk across the stage (why would the want to?) but you want to let defenseless children ride unprotected in cars? That is some real twisted reasoning. It’s nice that you have pleasant memories of riding unprotected as a child. There are many children who did not live to have such memories. Those children were the victims of their parent’s ignorance. As much as I hate governments of all kinds this is one of the few places that I think that they actually do some good. Children should not be the victims of stupid parents. And for those who focus more on money than people, stupid people also drive up everyone’s insurance rates. We should be able to smoke what we want, dance naked in the streets, make love in the parks and spray paint the urban landscape, but I have no problem with the man protecting the kids.
Anne,
I would rather have the opportunity to make up my own mind about most things than have the penalty of law deciding for me. However, I'm not an idiot. I choose to wear a motorcycle helmet, but I resent the hell the idea that I would HAVE to. It's sort of like when I would give my boxer his bath. Ol Butch would put the brakes on and it was just too hard to move him. However, if I waited a bit, he would realize the shower was inevitable, make up his own mind and would then walk into the shower. It just had to be HIS idea.
As a parent I would do everything possible to protect my child because that was my heart and responsibility. I wouldn't need the government to force me.
I can agree totally on some of your freedom issues. However, I wouldn't be thrilled to see somebody's naked butt as they humped in the park while I was just trying to relax and enjoy the sound of the actual birds and bees. (ha!)
I am fully aware of the way the government's dogma knife slices both ways on the smoking issue. On one hand they tax the bejeebers out of cigarettes to pay for education and health care for our kids, while on the other hand, they practically outlaw the actual smoking of the legal product. I just don't get it. If it's for the kids, then the gov't should be providing the matches! The paradox confuses me even though I don't smoke myself. That's the government for you and I for one and getting fed up with their nanny-ism. I'm very surprised that a free spirit such as yourself is not.
Oh Nancy!!! You ride a motorcycle and thought that I was talking about tobacco? Hell, It’d be good with me if they outlawed that trash, if for no other reason than the amount of money that corruptorations make off it. No honey, I was talking about good old homegrown weed. Maybe if you smoked a little you might lighten up on the sex-negative attitude. You may not want to see folks doing it in the park but profits from the adult entertainment industry suggest that a whole lot of people would spend more time in the park if there were a little wholesome fornication going on there. Raw animal sex is beautiful all by itself, but when you spice it up with human love, fantasy and just plane old screwed up psychology, it makes for some real entertaining viewing. Corporate Amerika has made you believe that all bodies that aren’t 22 y.o. and skinny are ugly. Sweetie, no matter how old you are or how not skinny you might be, I promise you that there are a lot of men and women who would find great pleasure in gazing on and caressing your body. That desire is powerful; it is beautiful; and it is a gift of the goddess. Blessed Be.
Why shouldn't the government protect children from parents who smoke pot, tobacco, eat too much fried food, vote in a certain way? How do you draw the line on what too much government interference is?
Hugh,
Bingo! Our anarchist friend is easily satisfied with hedonism instead of freedom which either requires government regulation in areas of personal competency or through his somatic state, the government seizes its opportunity to slither in.
Foolishness in one, becomes regulation on the rest of us and because some nut drove 80 mph through a parking lot, we all must suffer regulated speed bumps. Punish the reckless, not the innocent. I want my liberty back!
Hugh,
I can't see a method to contact you other than through comments. I appreciate very much your blog idea and especially like the local aspect. If you can accept a blogsite as a local small business, I invite you to visit my own site jackalope.blogspot.com
I think you could appreciate the rough and rowdy world of intellectual mud wrestling. I'm a brave girl.
